We at Tumbling Woods of Dorset, England believe the true British culture lays within our folklore. One only has to look around our beautiful isles to see the abundance of forests woodlands and parks that proliferate in such a small country to recognize the major part trees play in our lives.
From carefully selected items of traditional tree myths legends and folklore, we hand make many environmentally friendly items that reflect Britain’s fantastic heritage and culture. Those simple every day sayings ‘touch wood’, in a nutshell’ and ‘by hook or by crook’ are a reflection of those golden threads of our history that have over many centuries become woven into the fabric of our modern complicated every day lives.
We would like to reintroduce you to some of those past beliefs and offer you the opportunity to decide for your selves whether they are relevant to your own life today. We deliberately do not seek to expand beyond the basic beliefs of the ancient myths or make spurious claims of their effectiveness; the object is not to convince or persuade people, but to offer the individual a low cost opportunity to judge for themselves their validity to modern life whilst enjoying the experience of wearing a natural product.
Many of these myths and legends have their origins in the ancient Classic Celtic, Saxon and Norse civilizations. Subsequent inhabitants of our wonderful isles have only added to our rich tapestry of tree lore over the centuries. These ancient ancestors had great faith in the spiritual nature of the world around them. They understood that people were only a part of nature, temporary custodians of the planet not permanent proprietors of it. Other generations divorced themselves from this ideal and by doing so lost contact with nature, actively pursuing its destruction. We are only now starting to understand the result of those actions. We will never return to those ancient times and ways however we can try to use some of that ancient knowledge, wisdom and belief in an attempt to improve our lives and rebuild that important contact with the natural world around us.
