THE WOODSMAN'S LEGACY 'BIRTH TREE TALISMAN' FOR ADULTS & CHILDREN

When three handwritten books belonging to a relative born in the mid 19th century were discovered the 'WOODSMAN'S LEGACY' came to light. The books that she was given as a young lady contained poems regarding an ancient 'Birth Tree' system as used by a woodsman from Dorset. The system is closely linked to the 'Celtic Astrological Year'.

Each season is represented by two deciduous trees which symbolize the ancient Celtic Solar Festivals enabling people to remain in contact with the natural cyles of nature. These seasonal turning points represented by the eight trees marked characteristic changes in people.

The wooden Talisman, a good luck charm, has been carried for centuries by country folk. Some worn as a toggle on clothing whilst others as a simple form of jewellery. Many of the press ganged sailors of the 18th century carried their own personal talisman 'touching the tali' was a symbol of good fortune. 'Touch Wood for Luck' dates back to the ancient Celtic civilisation of 400 B.C. who believed it lucky to touch a tree.

We at Tumbling Woods have recreated a wooden talisman that has been in our family for years and is thought to be an original made by the woodsman in the mid 19th century. Each talisman is a piece of branch from the relevant birth tree marked with the ancient runic symbol believed to depict a Viking warrior with his arms raised to his gods calling for protection.
